Gerald is a giraffe, a very clumsy giraffe. He was good at standing still, but not the best at running and dancing. Every year in Africa there was a jungle dance, where all the animals convened. As he watched all of the other animals dance, Gerald became very sad because he knew he wasn’t good at dancing. He tried anyway but got laughed at and he froze. He left the jungle dance sad and alone. He met a cricket who taught him that he just needed to find music that he loved in order to dance!
I think this is a super cute book. It teaches kids that it is OK to be different, and it is OK to dance to the beat of your own drum. Gerald is such a lovable character that I think everyone can relate to him in some way. The text is fun and simple, and utilizes great rhymes. I love that not only are we exposed to several different animals, but also different kinds of dancing too! The illustrations are fantastic. Every page is colorful and bold with tons of detail, without being too busy. Definitely recommended, especially for those who are learning to dance and manipulate full body movement.
