Ape is a nonfiction book about the five kinds of great apes in the world. This includes the Orangutan, Chimps, Bonobos, Gorillas, and lastly Humans. For each ape, we learn about where they live, what they eat, their social lives, their children and more. Each ape is illustrated beautifully in gigantic and fairly detailed pictures. They are for the most part done in black and white, with subtle hints of browns. One thing I would change would be to add a bit more pop of color, perhaps some greens in the wide variety of plant life pictured. One of my favorite parts of the books is that it draws attention to the similarities between humans and the other four types of great apes. It also draws attention to the fact that the four other apes are much more rare than humans, and that we are trying to set up protection areas. Really great nonfiction books for preschool and early elementary aged kids!
